About Us

Welcome
We are a micro coffee roastery based out of Atlanta, Georgia. Greg Lewis started the company in July of 2020. Greg and his wife Mai-Lan started Hanzo Coffee to share their love of coffee with the world. They both come from a culinary arts background. Working in the hospitality industry for many years. Greg was actually not a coffee drinker until a life changing moment in Philadelphia. He walked into a coffee shop, La Colombe on 130 S and 19th Street. Ordered what was on drip with cream and sugar. A happy accident happened and they gave him his coffee black. It opened his eyes to how coffee is supposed to taste and he was blown away. That started his journey to find coffee roasters producing amazing cups. That also made him start roasting coffee at home. Researching, learning and studying coffee. After a year of intense studying Greg felt ready to start selling his coffee. We are looking to grow into a space of our own! We want to provide the best locally roasted coffee in Atlanta. Each of our roasts are roasted by our owner Greg directly.
"Coffee is very much like good food. If you know good food, you know good coffee" - Greg, Owner of Hanzo Coffee
Why "Hanzo Coffee"?
Greg has been practicing and competing in the Japanese martial art of Kendo. The easiest way to describe Kendo is Japanese fencing. He has been doing Kendo since 2013 and has had good results in testing and tournaments. When naming the company he wanted to pay homage to his love of Kendo and Japanese culture. Hattori Hanzo was a famous Samurai from the Edo period in Japan. Kendoka (Kendo practitioners) would be considered modern day Samurai. Hattori Hanzo has also been depicted in media as a sword maker. We are using the name "Hanzo" as homage to Kendo and the Samurai spirit. As well as the made up sword maker depiction in media to translated into roasting coffee.
